Sky of Dust: The Last Weapon by Joshua Bonilla takes place in a post apocalyptic world. The author has created an interesting and intriguing story that keeps you wanting more. The plot has several cliff hangers and provides ample dramatic tension to move the story along. However I felt that the characters and the world they inhabit were somewhat lacking in the details and descriptions that would truly complete this story. Overall though this is a good story with great potential that I would recommend to teens and young adults.
Description, Characterization & World-Building Rating: 3.5/5
While the characters are likable and the book contains sufficient world building to set the scenery in which the story takes place, I found the characters to be somewhat lacking in personality and depth. I would have preferred more depth to the characters and more detailed descriptions of the characters and the world they inhabit.
Plot & Narration Rating: 4/5
The plot is very interesting and moves the story along quickly with some nice twists. The prologue does a good job of grabbing your attention and the epilogue nicely sets the stage for a sequel. Overall the narration is easy to read and also moves the story along nicely, but it felt somewhat awkward to see the short one to two sentence paragraphs. If the paragraphs were condensed, this book would probably be about half its current 260 page length, leaving plenty of room for the additional details I mentioned before that would flesh out the story better.
Value Rating: 4/5
The current Amazon list prices are $2.99 for the Kindle version which is a good value and $12.99 for paperback, which some may consider high.
