The Eclectic Book Review of Captured – A Novella by Elizabeth Bolling

Captured by Elizabeth BollingCaptured is Elizabeth Bolling’s debut novel, and as such I feel that it is well above average.  The author shows promise and I commend her for attempting to combine the two genres of suspense and romance into a single novella, let alone her first one.  That is certainly not an easy thing to do.  Her description and world building really help to give the story shape and substance.  I do feel that this book could use some additional work on characterization in order to give the characters more depth and personality.  I also feel that it could use some additional plot development in order to increase the dramatic tension.  However, overall I think that Captured by Elizabeth Bolling is above average for a first novel and I would recommend it to any mature audience.

Description, Characterization & World-Building Rating: 4/5

The author is very descriptive in her writing which helps the reader to visualize the story as it unfolds on the pages.  The world building skills she employs are well above average for new authors.  However I feel that her characterization could use work.  The characters were mostly interesting and believable, but some seemed to lack the depth and personality that truly make them stand out as unique.

Plot & Narration Rating: 3.5/5

Overall this is written to be a suspenseful romance and the plot propels the story along rather nicely, with all of the necessary elements to complete the story.  However I found it to be rather straightforward and predictable, lacking the increasing levels of dramatic tension and literary devices that lend themselves to that end.   Aside from that there were a few occurrences where the timeline of the story felt strange or awkward.  The narration was well done and easy to read with only a few instances of spelling or grammar mistakes, which could be easily corrected with additional editing.

The Eclectic Book Review of What the Author Wants the Author Gets by Cherry Celestia

I’m not generally a fan of romance or erotic fiction, but I enjoyed reading this book.  What the Author Wants the Author Gets by Cherry Celestia is down and dirty carnal erotica at its finest!   This is a short but entertaining work of erotic fiction that keeps you turning the pages the whole way through.  The author packs a big punch into the short 38 pages of this book.  If you are looking for some steamy entertainment that won’t take up too much of your time, this book is for you.  One word of warning however…due to the sexually explicit content, this book is for adults only!

Description, Characterization & World-Building Rating: 4.5/5

This book is extremely descriptive just as erotic fiction should be.  The characters are entertaining and mostly believable though there were just a few parts where their actions or dialogue seemed to go against what you would expect.  For its length, there was enough world building to set the scenes and make the story more believable but not too much that it overshadows the purpose of the story itself–to entertain and excite you with the erotic sex scenes.

Plot & Narration Rating: 5/5

Although this is a very short work of fiction, it has a developed and appropriate plot that drives it along.  The narration is superb and really helps to flesh the story out and keep it moving.

Value Rating: 5/5

With a current Amazon list price of $0.99 for the Kindle version, this is a great value.

The Eclectic Book Review of The Seahorse And The Hawk (SOUL MATES) by Cynthia P. James

Although I’ve never been much of a romance fan, Cynthia P. James does a great job at telling a story and hooking the reader from the very first page.  I would have liked this story to be much longer, but this book appears to be a preview teaser for her series, due to its short length, and I can only hope that the rest of her series is as well written but longer.   She seems to have genuine talent when it comes to developing characters, setting, and plot, but the short length of this book does not showcase her skills and talent as well as they could be in a longer work.  My only caveat with this book, aside from the fact that it is for adults only, is to be prepared to purchase the rest of the series in case you enjoy it.

Description, Characterization & World-Building Rating: 4/5

The author is very descriptive and draws you into the story quite well.  Her characterization and world building skills seem to be very good, unfortunately the short three chapters we have to spend with these characters does not give enough time to truly appreciate that.

Plot & Narration Rating: 4/5

Plot and narration also seem to be fairly good, but again the short length of this story don’t give the reader much more than a taste of so much more potential.  It can only be
