Ashes of Heroes (War of Regret) by Gabriel Archer and Jack Canaan is one of the by far one of the best self-published novels I have read. The authors are exceptionally gifted storytellers who have taken great care to craft every aspect of this story about rich multi-dimensional characters that live in a highly detailed and oftentimes bone chilling world they have created. I highly recommend Ashes of Heroes to any serious fantasy lover!
Description, Characterization & World-Building Rating: 5/5
This is one of the most descriptive novels I have read in a long time. The characters are multilayered and inhabit a world steeped in detail and culture that it can sometimes be hard to remember it is fictional.
Plot & Narration Rating: 4.5/5
This story has more twists than a politician’s campaign promises, but it’s much more satisfying! Although it can sometimes be a little difficult to follow, believe me when I tell you to just go with it. You’ll be happy you did. The narration is well done. The author’s are true wordsmith’s who have obviously taken great care to craft how their story is read and interpreted. My only complaint is with the dialogue. Since it is generally included in the paragraphs with the rest of the story as opposed to being set off alone, it can sometimes be difficult to follow and I found myself having to read some passages again.
